At Prattville High School, teaching is more than a profession for Tommy King— it is a calling rooted in service, mentorship, and a passion for helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom. A proud graduate of Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Math Education, this 11th-grade math teacher has spent years investing in the future of young people through education, encouragement, and leadership.
“I truly believe teaching was a calling,” he shared. “I love young people and investing in their futures.” That sense of purpose is evident in the way he approaches his classroom each day. Students quickly recognize that his classroom is a place where they become challenged, supported, and encouraged to believe in themselves.
As an Algebra 2 teacher, he enjoys showing students how math applies to everyday life and future careers. He believes math is more than numbers and equations — it is a life skill that teaches problem-solving, critical thinking, and perseverance. “It’s a sense of empowerment when I teach Algebra 2 because it translates into the real world,” he explained. Helping students understand concepts they once thought were impossible is one of the most rewarding parts of his job.
While many people view teaching as simply delivering lessons, he believes the role is much deeper.

"You have to do more than teach, you become so much more to your students."
For him, being an educator also means serving as a positive role model, especially for male students who benefit from guidance, consistency, and encouragement during important stages of life. He hopes students leave his classroom not only stronger academically, but also more confident personally.
His goals as an educator reflect his heart for students: to be a positive role model, to equip students to be competitive and confident after high school, and to spread joy to students who may be facing difficult days. Whether through a lesson, a conversation, or a simple smile, he strives to make a meaningful impact every day.
